Major League Baseball Coach Finds a FileMaker Coach

Oakland Athletics

Oakland A’s first base coach, Tye Waller, had mounds and mounds of scouting reports for different players and pitchers. He knew there had to be an easier way to prepare his team than manually updating the opponent’s data for each upcoming series. That process took a long time and its manual nature created a risk for error. He had been using Microsoft Access for years, but downloaded FileMaker and started building a custom solution on his own to help him manage and prepare his scouting reports. He then sought out a FileMaker coach to help him build a more powerful database solution.

The Challenge

Tye needed a faster, more efficient, and more reliable way to have player reports available. He also needed the reports to be neat, easy to read, and able to share with others. Finally, the solution had to be iPad-compatible.

The Solution

Working with one of our coaches, Tye was able to build out the necessary functionality of the system, including integrating the latest player statistics to give the most accurate scouting reports and metrics. With the integration, Tye is able to generate reports on all of Major League Baseball’s batters and pitchers as well as minor league prospects.

One unique aspect of the solution is Major League Baseball’s prohibition of any technology in the dugout. This makes it so Tye needs to be able to print out his scouting reports–something we were happy to help him with developing and designing.

The Results

The new application saves Tye time by allowing him to automatically update player data and sharing it with his coaching staff and players before each series. All of this adds up to the coaching staff gaining an edge in scouting so the A’s can contend for a championship each year.

For Tye personally, his new FileMaker solution allows him to spend more time hitting the links and coaching players how to be successful in baseball and life.

"The new FileMaker custom website interface is very user-friendly and easy to follow for our clients. In addition, it is much faster than the old Instant Web Publishing (IWP) interface. Thank you and all the others who have helped us out at DB Services. I am very grateful for the excellent service you provide us. Its nice to know we can call you for help if we have an issue."

"We needed a solution that would simplify the administration of our responsibilities under our contract with the State of Indiana. We have seen a dramatic increase across the state in the number of potential foster and adoptive parents that have begun the preparation and training process. This increase has resulted in a significant opportunity for children available for adoption. That’s a big win for everyone! And it’s all because we can refer potential parents to the proper state contacts efficiently and quickly."

"Thank you for our new database system. We transitioned from a carbon copy paper based system to a digital database. The software has saved us time and money. We used to archive all our jobs in cabinets, now we can look up a job in seconds from anywhere. The software allows us to easily email estimates to our customers in pdf format. In a year there was a return on investment just from eliminating the purchasing of our carbon forms."
Todd Cartmel
"The new system allows us to create and track jobs for customers along with inventory, something we had been doing with separate word and spreadsheet files. Because it’s now so intuitive, new staff members are able to begin using the database immediately without our usual training session and ‘cheat sheets’ for getting around within the file."
