Claris FileMaker Server 21.1 Overview

Claris FileMaker Server 21.1.

Claris has released the first minor version update to FileMaker Server 21! This update brings with it some new, useful features, including quality-of-life updates, additional security options, and more. With this update, system administrators have even more tools in their FileMaker toolbelt.

  • Create and remove sub-folders from databases list

  • HTTP tunneling for MacOS and Windows

  • "Pull to Refresh" disabled by default for mobile browsers

  • Keystroke triggers on WebDirect

  • Replace existing Java button

  • Open last-opened databases

  • Email notifications for warning-level events

  • Import SSL certificate by file via Admin API

Data API and OData Limits Removed

As promised during Claris Engage 2024, Data API and OData no longer have data limits! To compliment this change, the panel tracking data usage for the Data API has now been removed from the admin console as well. With this there is now no worry of hitting a possible cap for your custom solution. Please note however, that FMCloud customers will still have these limits unfortunately.

Create and Remove Sub-Folders from the Databases List

Administrators can now create and remove database sub-folders through the admin console.

  1. Click "All Databases" and select a root-level database folder from the dropdown list.

  2. From the dropdown menu, you can create a new subfolder or delete an existing one.

HTTP Tunneling for MacOS and Windows

Previously, HTTP tunneling was available for FileMaker Server running on Ubuntu 22. Now, you can enable this feature on macOS and Windows. Windows requires enabling Nginx server via the admin console interface. This allows administrators to use port 443 for FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Go traffic.

Admin API to Manage HTTP Tunneling

To support this new feature, Claris added a new endpoint:

Methods: GET, PATCH

Endpoint: /fmclients/httpstunneling

payload: {"enableHTTPSTunneling": true | false}

Enabling Keystroke Triggers on WebDirect

Administrators can now enable OnLayoutKeystroke and OnObjectKeystroke script triggers on WebDirect. This will only work for the Esc/Return/Enter keys. If your solution has users on both FM Pro and WebD, this feature can bring UX uniformity.

To enable:

  1. Stop FileMaker Server.

  2. Modify jwpc_prefs.xml at /FileMaker Server/Web Publishing/conf/, to set keystrokeenabled=yes.

  3. Start FileMaker Server.

Replace Existing Java Button

On Windows and macOS, Admin Console > Connectors > Web Publishing > Web Publishing Engine now includes the option to replace the JDK, allowing you to update the installed JDK. This can prove helpful when accidentally installing the wrong version or when trying to troubleshoot.

Option to Open Last-Opened Databases

Administrators can now specify to open only the last-opened databases in Admin Console > Configuration > General Settings > Startup Settings. This is useful if you want to keep a file on the server as an archive, but don't want it available to general users. Keep in mind that closed files will not get picked up by the backup schedules, so we don't recommend storing a FileMaker file like this in the long term.

Email Notifications for Warning-Level Events

The admin console now has an option to send out emails for either "Errors only" (default) or "Errors and Warnings". When configuring via the Admin API, use "notifyLevel" with value 1 for Errors only, or value 2 for "Errors and Warnings".

Import SSL Certificate by File via Admin API

The Admin API supports a new endpoint "/server/certificate/importcertfiles" which will receive a pem file via multi-part form data.

Miscellaneous Updates

  • Support for macOS Sequoia 15.

  • Improved WebDirect login performance.

  • Multiple backup schedules may now be processed simultaneously.

  • Upload databases via FMDeveloperTool

  • The event.log file now includes an error when the WPE process doesn't start because Java is not installed.

  • Dashboard displays count of Data API connections.
